Man Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter Of Bensalem Brother-In-Law

BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, PA —A New Jersey has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the assault of his brother-in-law, which led to his death last June, authorities said.

Antwan McKoy, 37, of Maple Shade, N.J., turned himself in to Bensalem Police Friday for the incident which took place last June 19 at the Bucks Meadows Apartments at 3131 Knights Road, Bensalem Township Police said.

The Bensalem Township Police Department said that a Bucks County grand jury recommended charges of involuntary manslaughter, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment after reviewing evidence and hearing testimony presented by the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.

Police said the victim, Michael Whispell, was staying with his mother at apartment 5-46.

Around 11 p.m., McKoy arrived with his wife, Saketha Jackson, the victim’s sister.

While inside, the two men began arguing and both stood up from the couch, police said.

McKoy grabbed Whispell by the neck and began choking him. Whispell threw a punch at McKoy, who responded by punching Whispell twice in the temple and throwing him to the ground where he struck his head, police said.

McKoy then jumped on top of Whispell before the altercation was broken up by family members, police said

Later that evening, Whispell said he could not sleep due to the pain in his head from the assault.

Bensalem Police and Bensalem EMS arrived at the apartment.

Whispell lost consciousness while being transported to the hospital and was placed in a medically-induced coma and never regained consciousness, police said.

He died last July 4. His autopsy revealed that his cause of death was from complications of blunt impact injury to the head.

McKoy was arraigned by District Justice Joseph Falcone on the charges recommended by the Grand Jury. He was sent to the Bucks County Correctional Facility on 10 percent of $5,000,000 bail.
