Parx Planning More Expansion

Casino reps expected to appear Monday before Township Council

representatives plan to appear before the Township Council on Monday night to seek permission for another expansion.

Project attorney Doug Maloney explained that the pending discussion would follow a hearing held Thursday night at which time the township Zoning Hearing Board granted approval for 735 new parking spaces required as a result of the latest expansion plan.

Parx, Maloney explained, will seek a 37,000 square-foot expansion for mixed uses including space for gaming, restaurants, an employee dining room and offices. He said that space would be in addition to a 90,000-square-foot expansion approved in 2010.

The attorney said he believes Parx plans to start the overall expansion project this summer.

Maloney said Thursday's zoning board approval is contingent upon the new spaces, along with 1,232 spaces previously approved by that board, be held in reserve. He said the total number of approved spaces is far more than needed.

“The township has no parking standard for casinos so it is using a restaurant standard, which is tougher than any,” he said.

It is Parx intent to try to get the township to eventually establish an ordinance to address parking for the casino, Maloney said.

“Instead of creating a vast wasteland of asphalt, it's better to keep it green,” he added.
