SCORE Bucks County to hold ‘Women Building Businesses’ Workshop

The free event, which features 3 speakers and breakout sessions, will be held on June 23.

Female entrepreneurs and business owners in Bucks County can hear from women speakers on balancing work and life, leadership and more during the “Women Building Businesses” workshop.

The free seminar, which is being sponsored by SCORE Bucks County, in conjunction with SCORE Philadelphia, will be held at Parx Casino on June 23. The event features keynote speaker Neen James, of Doylestown, as well Furia Rubel Chief Marketing Officer Laura Powers, and Bucks County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia.

Breakout sessions will follow the talks:

Since SCORE provides mentoring services to a significant number of women entrepreneurs and business owners, the workshop seemed like a natural fit for continued mentoring and networking, SCORE Bucks County Co-Chairs Erwin Michelfelder and Ray Valukonis said.

Australia native and Doylestown transplant Neen James will share insight from her upcoming book, “Attention Pays.”

“It’s my belief that we really need to give attention to get attention,” James said. “We need to know what’s the best use of our time right now.”

Particularly for business owners and entrepreneurs – who wear so many hats – focusing on the most important skill sets is key to increasing profitability, productivity and improving employee and customer engagement.

“As entrepreneurs, we only get a very finite amount of time,” James said. “Entrepreneurs can conquer the world in 15 minutes a day.”

Laura Powers, who started her graphic design business out of her home in 1996, eventually merging it with Furia Rubel in 2010, will touch on the challenges and successes of starting your own business.

One important lesson she learned: “You don’t get to do what you love all day long.” Especially for sole proprietors, it’s important to maintain your network and set boundaries within your home.

Third-term Bucks County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia said that as the only woman on the board – and during some of her service, the only Democrat – she learned how to use her voice. A social worker who often advocates for social services, she suggests women focus on their areas of expertise.

“Don’t try to be perfect. Pick a couple of things that you’re really good at and work on them,” Ellis-Marseglia said. “Women try to fix everything and be good at everything.”
