U.S. 1, Street Road Down To Single Lanes In Bensalem Next Week

New traffic patterns for construction will shut down the northbound ramps to and from Street Road on U.S. 1, PennDOT said.

BENSALEM, PA — Overnight lane closures will be in place next week on Street Road and U.S. 1 in Bensalem as crews finish setting up new, long-term traffic patterns needed for the ongoing construction there.

The new traffic patterns will close the northbound U.S. 1 ramps to and from eastbound Street Road, PennDOT said Friday.

The new patterns will mark the start of northbound work on a $94 million project to widen and improve a 1.3-mile stretch of U.S. 1 from Old Lincoln Highway, at the Philadelphia border, to north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Bensalem interchange.

On Monday, Feb. 11, through Friday, Feb. 15, from 8 p.m.-6 a.m., northbound and southbound U.S. 1 will be reduced to a single lane between Rockhill Road and Old Lincoln Highway. Street Road, likewise, will be reduced to a single lane between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way.

The lane closures will be in both directions on both Street Road and U.S. 1.

If any work is canceled due to weather, PennDOT said, the closures also could happen from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

The lane restrictions on U.S. 1 will allow crews to complete installing and securing the temporary construction barrier that separates southbound and northbound U.S. 1 traffic during construction. Once all of the center barrier is installed and secured late next week, weather permitting, northbound traffic will be shifted to the west.

Crews will then close the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1 and eastbound Street Road, complete installation of the concrete barrier that separates northbound U.S. 1 traffic from the work area and begin reconstruction of the northbound side of U.S.1 and the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1 and eastbound Street Road.

The lane restrictions on Street Road also will allow crews to complete the set-up of a temporary traffic pattern at the U.S. 1 overpass that will be in place for construction on the overpass and on the ramps on the south side of the interchange.

The new pattern will include temporary intersection signals that will let drivers on northbound U.S. 1 access eastbound Street Road by using the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1.

The new pattern on U.S. 1 will move two lanes of northbound and southbound traffic to the west for about two years while the northbound side of U.S. 1 and the Street Road ramps are rebuilt, PennDOT said. Turn lanes will be provided in both directions of U.S. 1 for access to properties inside the work zone.
