U.S. 1, Street Road Lanes To Close In Bensalem

BENSALEM, PA — Lanes on U.S. 1 and Street Road in Bensalem will be closed at night next week as crews move barriers and do other work related to new traffic patterns for the construction there.

On Monday, Feb. 25, through Friday, March 1, from 8 p.m.-6 a.m., northbound and southbound U.S. 1 will be reduced to a single lane between Rockhill Road and Old Lincoln Highway. Street Road (Rt. 132) also will be down to a single lane in both directions between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way.

The schedule is dependent on next week's weather.

PennDOT says the lane restrictions will let work crews adjust and secure temporary construction barriers and draw new lines for the new traffic patterns on both roadways. The new patterns are expected to be fully in place by early on Saturday, Feb. 23. They will move all U.S. 1 traffic to the west and close the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1 and eastbound Street Road.

Traffic for the closed ramps is being re-routed to the ramps on the opposite side of the interchange, where a temporary signaled intersection had been built at the base of the ramps.

The temporary intersection allows ramp traffic to access eastbound and westbound Street Road and for eastbound Street Road to access northbound U.S. 1. The ramp from westbound Street Road to northbound U.S. 1 is remaining open during the construction.

The new traffic pattern marks the beginning of what's expected to be two years of northbound construction that will include the reconstruction of the Street Road ramps on the northbound side of the interchange.

It's all part of a $94 million project to widen and improve a 1.3-mile section of U.S. 1 from Old Lincoln Highway, that the Philadelphia city limits, to north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Bensalem interchange.
