The Baldwin School Graduates 71

BRYN MAWR, PA – The Baldwin School sent off 71 seniors at its graduation commencement ceremony On Thursday, June 7.

Seniors of the 130th class of The Baldwin School earned 223 acceptances to 106 colleges and universities. Ninety percent were admitted to their top choice schools.

The 2018 commencement ceremony student speaker was Melia Hagino. Hagino, who was elected by her peers, delivered her speech at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.

This year's commencement keynote speaker was Carol L. Shields, MD, Chief of the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital and Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Shields completed her ophthalmology training at Wills Eye in 1987 and subsequently did fellowship training in ocular oncology, oculoplastic surgery and ophthalmic pathology. She has authored or coauthored 12 textbooks, over 1,400 articles in major journals, over 300 textbook chapters, given over 700 lectureships and earned many awards.

In 2003, she was the first women to be awarded The Donders Award, which is given by the Netherlands Ophthalmological Society every five years to an ophthalmologist worldwide who has contributed to the field of ophthalmology. Shields is a member of numerous ocular oncology, pathology and retina societies and serves on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals.

Facts about The Baldwin School Class of 2018:

• 25 percent of the class was accepted at an Ivy League school: Brown University, Columbia University (3), Cornell University (3), Harvard University (3) and University of Pennsylvania (7).
• Class average SAT scores were 200 points above the national average.
• Nine students have committed to play college athletics at the following schools: University of Virginia, Rowing; University of Virginia, Lacrosse; Franklin and Marshall College, Softball; Franklin and Marshall College, Lacrosse; Harvard University, Squash; Georgetown University, Rowing; Brown University, Squash; Franklin and Marshall College, Tennis; and Emory University, Soccer.
• 20 percent of the class has attended Baldwin since Kindergarten.
• 50 percent of students planning to major in a STEM field.
