Bryn Mawr 10-Year-Old Making Care Packages For Needy Kids

"We think of toys or food as a given, but when we truly open our eyes we see that they are not," Rhea Howard, 10, of Bryn Mawr, said.

BRYN MAWR, PA – It's not often 10-year-old kids have the insight to think of others in need during a time of year when they are typically inundated with gifts. But a Bryn Mawr 1o-year-old did have the age-defying wisdom to use the spirit of giving to help children in need during the holidays.

Rhea Howard, 10, is looking to send care packages to children who are in the People’s Emergency Center homeless shelter in Philadelphia.

"As a ten year old, presents are a big deal for me this time of year," Rhea writes on a GoFundMe page to help support her mission. "We think of toys or food as a given, but when we truly open our eyes we see that they are not."

Rhea is raising money to put together 120 holiday care packages for children in the People’s Emergency Center.

Each care package will contain a note of encouragement, a quote, a toy, and one item off of their wishlist, she said.

"This idea came to me when I was looking through some old care packages from summer camp and remembered how excited I was receiving them," she writes. "This got me thinking about how much other children would enjoy getting them. I think that the children going through this terrible phase would especially like to know that someone is thinking about them."

In just one day, Rhea's GoFundMe campaign generated more than $650 of its $1,000 goal through 16 donations. You can help support her mission by donating at the campaign's website here.

"If you decide on sponsoring I give many thanks to you, and I will share my progress with you along the way," Rhea says on the campaign website. "In this time of year when presents are all around us, lets remember that there are children out there that could use a present."
