Bryn Mawr Basketball Donates To Alumna's African Organization
Owls donations to Universal Promise helped set up a netball program in Nomathamsanqa, South Africa

Former Bryn Mawr Owl basketballer Martha Cummings, Class of 1980, started an organization in South African several years ago to better the communities in the country. One of her goals was to set up a netball program in Nomathamsanqa in the city of Addo.
According to GoBrynMawr.com, Cummings reached out to Bryn Mawr College's basketball team for some assistance in getting netball, a basketball-like game, set up for her organization, Universal Promise. The team and Head Coach Becky Tyler jumped on the opportunity to help an alumna and former hoopster by sending uniforms, warm-up gear, and equipment.
"When I watched a young girl slip on that jersey, and saw the smile on her face, realizing that in that moment her dream of playing a sport she loves would be realized, I nearly lost it," Cummings told GoBrynMawr.com. "What a full-circle event. When they were all dressed up in their BMC unis, I taught them how to say anassa kata, as we did before every game. How surreal to watch the broad impact of Bryn Mawr College."

According to Universal Promise's website, the Addo Netball Development Program (ANDP) promotes teamwork and exposes girls to high-level coaching and competition. "Females play a vital role in the successful functioning of all cultures," ANDP founder Lungsi said." When females are valued for their intellect, athletic prowess, and potential to fulfill their lifelong dreams, the entire community rises up to combat sexism, racism, violence against women, and other narrow-minded behavior that hinders a society’s progress."
Visit Universal Promise's website for more information on the organization's programs, how to volunteer or donate, and more.
