Bryn Mawr College President, Dean Say Trump's Immigration Ban "At Odds" With Education

The college will host a community discussion on the executive order Wednesday.

Bryn Mawr College officials released a statement Sunday addressing President Donald Trump's executive order regarding immigration from a select few countries in the Middle East, saying the order is "at odds" with the college and educational institutions in general.

"While many debate the implications of this order, it is clear that the order’s tone and approach are at odds with the fundamental mission of educational institutions in general and Bryn Mawr in particular," the statement said. "Bryn Mawr is an international community of student and faculty scholars; we value the gifts and perspectives of all members. Bryn Mawr is, moreover, a school that was founded for the purpose of making education available to those barred from other institutions. And Bryn Mawr’s tradition of shared governance teaches us that open dialogue is necessary to the achievement of knowledge, community, and peace."

Th message from college president Kim Cassidy and dean Jennifer Walters went on to say the college will uphold its dedication to supporting all students, faculty, staff, and guests and will not discriminate in its admissions process.

This week's Open Space Conversation will cover Trump's immigration ban. The conversation will be held in the Dorothy Vernon Room at the college.

"We urge students to reach out to their deans, faculty, and other support resources on campus to raise concerns or questions," the statement said. "The counseling office and the International Student and Scholar Services and Advising will be available to students as needed. We encourage all community members to join us in conversation as we move forward together."
