Designing Dreams Come True
A second grader shadows a Harcum College fashion design class and brings her own creations to life.
What did you dream of becoming when you were a child? Did you have a chance to shadow that profession? For second grader Asher Hackenberg, the dream of becoming a fashion designer is becoming a reality. Asher’s mother Meg shared some of her very detailed and creative sketches on social media and they caught the eye of the Fashion Design faculty at Harcum College.
Freddie Curtis, the Program Director for the Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising degree programs, invited the aspiring designer to visit the Harcum College campus and explore what it’s like to be a student in the program and learn about what it takes to bring ideas to life.
Asher arrived to class prepared with her own colored pencils and sketch pad and lots of ideas. Her use of bright colors and bold designs were very striking. Students in the program were very impressed with what she had been doing and couldn’t wait to help her.

It didn’t take her long to create a new design in class. An asymmetrical skirt with color blocking that she designed and constructed with some help from the design students and faculty will be featured in the upcoming student Fashion Show on Friday, April 27 at 8pm at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr. This will also be Asher’s first time modeling – her own design of course.
Faculty and students alike agree that Asher certainly has a bright future ahead of her. Everyone was thrilled to help her explore a career in the fashion industry and hope to see her continue to pursue her dreams.
