Join Dr. Richard Rosen of Drexel University for a special coffee lecture through Rosemont College's non-credit program, the Forum. Philadelphia has played an important role in baseball history for more than 175 years. It has contributed six major league teams to organized baseball since 1871. Perhaps the single most significant person in this long history was Connie Mack, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1900 as manager/part-owner of the final iteration of the Philadelphia Athletics; he remained in his position for over fifty years. Under his tutelage, the Athletics won nine American League pennants and five World Series titles, and fielded what is arguably the best team in Major League Baseball history in 1929. Dick Rosen will trace this history with facts, figures, and personal stories of the main characters in this long run. He will also bring in other aspects of Philadelphia baseball including the emergence of the Phillies, whose recent success will be noted. He will also elicit the sharing of personal baseball stories from the audience.
