Former Letterman, Simpsons Writer To Present "Industrial Musicals" Show At Bryn Mawr Film Institute
Comedy writer Steve Young will discuss corporate-produced musicals that tried to sell bathtubs, tractors, gasoline, and more.
Would you watch a musical that was trying to sell you a washing machine? Maybe you need a new lawnmower, so why not listen to a show tune about one? Looking to re-tile your kitchen? Well how about a two-act play to sell you on a tile type?
These productions actually happened when Broadway and business collided, and comedy writer Steve Young has written a book about the corporate musicals.
Young will present his unique findings at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. Copies of Young's book "Everything's Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age of Industrial Musicals" – which he co wrote with Sport Murphy – will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

Young discovered the corporate musical genre when working on a segment for the Late Show with David Letterman. For 20 years, Young collected musicals from the likes of BF Goodrich and Mattel and will show clips and provide commentary at the Oct. 5 event.
Young's findings are currently being turned into a documentary.
