Longtime Lower Merion High School Principal Sean Hughes tragically lost his life in a car crash in November 2021. Prior to becoming principal -- a position he held for 14 years -- Mr. Hughes served as an assistant principal, as the athletics and activities director and as a social studies teacher. During his tenure at Lower Merion, he touched the lives of thousands of students, reminding them to heed his favorite lesson: "Character Counts."

In the weeks since the tragedy, many people have shared thoughts about how best to memorialize Mr. Hughes and his immeasurable impact on Lower Merion High School. To ensure that each of these concepts receives thoughtful consideration, the District is looking for volunteers to serve on the Sean Hughes Tribute Committee. The committee will evaluate the ideas that have already been proposed, brainstorm possible additional concepts and create a process to bring an appropriate and meaningful memorial to fruition. The committee is expected to include members of the Hughes Family, students, staff, alumni, parents/guardians and community members who were connected to Mr. Hughes in a meaningful way.
If you are interested in serving on the Sean Hughes Tribute Committee, please fill out this application form. Applications will be reviewed by current Lower Merion High School administrators and the Hughes Family. The goal will be to include members who represent a cross-section of the past and present LMHS community, with a variety of skill sets and backgrounds. Preference will be given to applicants with personal connections to Mr. Hughes and to those with experience in fundraising for and executing similar projects.
