Harriton's buildOn Club Raises Thousands To Build Schools In Haiti
Harriton and Lower Merion high schoolers raised $150,000 to build two schools in rural, impoverished areas of Haiti.
BRYN MAWR, PA – Harriton High Schools' buildOn club made some serious contributions to rural, impoverished areas in Haiti recently. The clubs from both Harriton and Lower Merion high schools generated $150,000 to build schools in the struggling areas.
According to the Lower Merion School District, the clubs' Trek Teams raised the money over seven months, which entails "around the clock" fundraising.
The money will be used to build two schools in the La Civette and Platon Robert areas of Haiti. Money will also go toward adult literacy programs in those areas, the district said.

According to the district, almost half of all primary school-age children in Haiti do not attend school, and Haitian public schools have the capacity to serve only one quarter of the school-age population.
Students from both clubs recently traveled to Haiti where they spent two weeks immersing themselves in Haitian culture.
