How Safe Is Bryn Mawr Hospital?

A hospital safety group has released its grades for hospitals across Pennsylvania, using patient safety as the main metric. In the Main Line area, Bryn Mawr Hospital earned a "B" in 2016. But what grade did it earn in 2017?

According to the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Group, the hospital has increased its patient safety enough to give it an even better grade.

The group gives the hospital a "A" grade for 2017.

The grades are based on several factors, including medical errors, the quality of staffing, surgical complications and infections.

The goal of the grades is to determine what a patient's risk of further injury or infection is if they visit a certain hospital.

According to the organization, more than 1,000 Americans die each day from preventable hospital errors. Hospitals given a B rating by Leapfrog had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than A hospitals. That number jumps to 35 percent in C hospitals and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals.

At the state level, Pennsylvania was ranked 34rd in the nation, down one slot from spring 2016. Maine was ranked No. 1. Hawaii, Oregon, Wisconsin and Idaho rounded out the top five.

The Leapfrog Group, founded by employers and healthcare providers, has been grading hospitals for more than a decade.
