When Web Manager Amy Shumoski’s son Aidan lost a friend to suicide he was very troubled, as would be expected from any 9-year old. However, what Aidan and his school family at The Shipley School did following this horrific ordeal was very important.
Team Cayman was formed at Shipley and Aidan was part of it, to honor the memory and celebrate the life of Cayman Naib. The team raised money and awareness for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by participating in the first Main Line Campus Walk. The walk took place at Ashbridge Park in Bryn Mawr, PA on Saturday, April 18.
Several other local schools joined the walk, including Villanova and Widener. With over 100 walkers, the event raised over $6,000. More importantly it raised awareness. After cancer and heart disease, suicide accounts for more years of life lost than any other cause of death.

Amy and Aidan’s efforts are part of the 100 Acts of Service initiative to celebrate Harcum’s Centennial. Harcum’s goal is to give back to the community by completing at least 100 service projects during 2015. See all the completed projects at harcum.edu/100projects.
