Pizzi's Pizza Offers Greek-Style Pizza and Specialties
This week food writer Clara Park reviews Pizzi's Pizza in Bryn Mawr.
Unknown to many people is that the origins of pizza are heavily disputed. Greeks point to the dough that was covered in oils, herbs and cheese and enjoyed in ancient Greece as the precursor to modern day pizza, while Italians claim that pizza is a purely Neopolitan invention. has Greek specialties on the menu.
Greek-style pizza has a thicker and crisper crust. The tomato sauce has more herbs, and the toppings are fairly abundant. In addition the pizza is usually baked in a pan rather than directly on the heating element. I don't have a favorite one, but I do tend to have moods where I'll crave either a simple slice of Neopolitan pizza or a thick and hearty Greek-style slice loaded with meat and vegetables. The pizza at Pizzi's is delicious. I ordered a plain slice and was surprised at how satisfying it was. It was great to sink my teeth into the thicker crust.
In addition, I chose to try some of the Greek specialties. I ordered the chicken gyros platter, which comes with a Greek salad and french fries ($6.85). I love that they took the time to grill the pita so that it was warm and toasty. The chicken was tender and flavorful, the tzatziki sauce added the right amount of cool, creamy yogurt and garlic to each bite, and the small Greek salad was topped with plenty of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, feta cheese and olives. The portion of french fries was generous. This combo was a great, affordable dinner option packed with protein and vegetables. I would recommend it to anyone.

The service at Pizzi's is quick and efficient. The team of people behind the counter was so friendly and engaging. They answered all my questions with a smile and no hesitation. The decor is typical of a pizza parlor, and there is plenty of seating upstairs. What is notable are the numerous beers available and the late night hours. They are open until 11 every night except Sunday.
When I went in, there was a Sixers game on, a bunch of guys waiting for their orders and some college students enjoying a late night snack upstairs. It was a convivial atmosphere, and I was told that the usual crowd is an equal mix of families and college kids. I will definitely go back the next time I get a hankering for a slice later at night or if I'm in the mood for a gyro sandwich.
