Viewfinder: Harriton Volleyball

An action-packed sport

Volleyball is a sport that requires a high degree of agility and stamina. A volleyball game consists of sets, each of which ends when one team scores 25 points; except for a fifth set, if necessary, which ends at 15. The team winning three sets wins the game.

For indoor competitive volleyball, there are six players on each side of the court arranged in three rows. A side can only hit the ball three times before sending it back over the net. Hitting it more than three times loses a point. No player can hit the ball twice in succession. Ideally, the first two hits will position a first-row player to drive the ball over the net with a placement that makes it difficult to impossible for the opponent to return the volley. Of course, it does not always work out that way. There are no specialized position players in volleyball. On each change of service the players on the serving team rotate positions. During a game each player will play at different points on the court several times. Every player has to be at every function. They all have to serve, hit, and block the ball.

On Friday afternoon, I stopped by to photograph the girls' varsity volleyball team take on Springfield High School. Unfortunately for Harriton, Springfield won the game, taking the first three sets with scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-11. Even with the loss, there was some good action. Check out the gallery to see it.
