Big Mac Football Season Starts Tonight

Coach Tim Sohyda said the team is ready to take on the rival Hillers.

football Coach Tim Sohyda knows that all the naysayers are predicting a losing season for the Big Macs. He is aware of how the numbers looked after last season—his first with the team— when Canon-McMillan finished its season 1-8.

Sohyda knows all of this, but he also knows something more important: A successful season isn't just about winning games; it is also about bettering the lives of the young men who play.

“The goal is always the same as far as working to help the youth in the community. We want to teach them teamwork and sportsman ship” Sohyda said.

While Sohyda puts a lot of emphasis on how his team plays the game, he also believes it is the team's attitude and work ethic that will lead them to win games and prove the analysts wrong.

“In all the years I've coached I don't think I've ever had a team where they all get along and really care about each other as much as this one. When you care about not letting the guy next to you down, that goes a long way. That is one thing we have going for us,” he said.

Another thing the team has going for them is a solid group of players returning from last season. All but one player from the offensive line is returning. Also, a strong group of seniors are returning, including Matt Maletta who will take over as starting quarterback this season.

Sohyda says he is happy with all of the effort and commitment he has seen going into the season, and is looking forward for the chance for his players to put all of their hard work on the field for everyone to see.

Canon-McMillan will kick off its season tonight at the home of its rival team, Trinity High School.

“If we are 0 and 9 this season, it won't be from lack of effort from the kids, the coaching staff or the lack of support from the athletic office,” said Sohyda.

According to Sohyda, it is important to remember that in high school and college, athletics are an extension of the educational process. While every team enjoys walking away victorious, Sohyda believes there is a lot more that should go into coaching and playing sports than counting wins.

Having been predicted to finish the season last in the division, the Big Macs head coach has a plan as they prepare for the first game of the season.

“We're going to play hard and earn some respect,” he said.
