The Furby is Back…A Hesitant Reflection Upon my Childhood

Furbies are back in action!

Hey 90’s kids, parents?! Do you remember that round, furry, big eyed, robotic voice of a toy that was capable of speaking 24 languages? Talk about cultural awareness! This toy got produced in the late 1990s and continued to the early 2000s and sold nearly 40 million units.

Furby was its name.

The Furby apocalypse is back.

Earlier this evening, as I was coming out of the Washington Wal-Mart, a big sign by the in-store McDonalds, a creature that exactly describes (just imagine the voice) the adjectives above, comes out. The picture showed a new Furby, available on Sept. 16.

It is now available for pre-order at www.walmart.com/furby. They say it has a “mind of its own.” That quote speaks the absolute truth, and still haunts me to this very day.

Do you remember the KB Toys that used to be in the Washington Crown Center (formerly known as Franklin Mall)? It used to have a small display at the store front of a couple interactive animal toys on a table, one being the Furby.

I remember walking up to the table, almost crying because that toy used to scare me. I would have nightmares about this Furby-like creature chasing me. Its voice alone would either make me run and cry, or stand still in complete horror (to the point where my dad would have to walk me away from it).

The new Furby does have new features such as interacting to music, beats, and tones. It also develops a “unique personality” based on how you care for your new Furby, and more.

Here is a link of how the original Furby compares to the new one:

If you or your child were into this little fun, fur ball of a creature, by all means, have fun! However, I for one will be staying as far away as I possibly can from it. I have nightmares about reality more/less something I never want to have to relive again.
