Canon-McMillan girls helped extend the girls basketball team’s losing streak just got a little longer Thursday at home when they won 57-19.
With this latest lost, the Moon girls fell to 0-20 for the season.
Anna Lombardo was the offensive star of the day for Canon-McMillan, tallying 17 points, while Emily Hansen added 16 points, helping the Big Macs climb over the .500 mark for the season at 10-9.
Megan Arendsen led the way for the Lady Tigers with nine points. Sarah Henderson and Dani Lewis also chipped with 4 and 3 points, respectively, in the losing effort.
Thursday evening’s game mirrored the teams’ previous meeting on Jan. 10, when the Big Macs dominated the Tigers on both ends of the ball on their way to an 80-35 win in Canonsburg.
But unlike last time, the Tigers came out fighting, meeting the Big Macs’ intensity on the defensive end, forcing turnovers and holding them to only 9 points in the first quarter.
Lombardo hit a few big shots in the second quarter for the Big Macs, who extended their lead to 20-12 at halftime.
“I thought we got off to a pretty good start tonight.” Tigers Head Coach Shannon Boyle said. “We hit a few shots early and I thought we played hard in the first half.”
The Big Macs hit their stride coming out for the third quarter though, connecting on four straight possessions to open the second half.
“They played a nice game, both offensively and defensively,” Boyle said. “They have a good team, and they proved that tonight.”
Turnovers and missed shots plagued the Tigers throughout the night. They only managed 7 points in the second half, and one single free throw was the only tally of the final period.
“We lost our edge in the second half. It’s been a tough year for our girls. But they play hard, and I’m proud of them for that,” Boyle said afterward.
The Lady Tigers will try to notch their first victory of the season on Monday, when they travel to Baldwin High School.
