UPDATED: Fire Chief Charged with DUI

Lawrence Fire Chief Don Hindman had a .253 blood alcohol content early Sunday morning after responding to a medical call, police said.

said Lawrence Fire Chief Don Hindman responded to a medical assist call early Sunday morning while intoxicated—and has been charged with driving under the influence.

Police charged Hindman, 49, with one count of DUI after officers "noticed his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot."

Officers said Hindman was "unsteady on his feet" and that the smell of alcohol was emanating from him.

Hindman was responding to a call on Filkorn Road at the request of Southbridge EMS.

He was driving a 2002 Chevy Silverado with municipal plates when he was pulled over by officers while driving away from the scene.

Police said Hindman failed field sobriety tests and was transported to the station, where a breath test showed a .253 blood alcohol content.

Charges will proceed by summons.

Reached Monday afternoon Cecil Township Manager Don Gennuso deferred comment until more information could be gleaned on the incident.

's office confirmed that North Strabane police had also charged Hindman with DUI in January.
