Meet First Street Bakery

The owners said for patrons to expect an expanded menu for the holidays (can you say pumpkin cheesecake?).

When Rebecca Morrow attended the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute, she never imagined the man who sat behind her in so many of her classes would become not only her business partner, but her husband as well.

Aaron and Rebecca Morrow are the owners of First Street Bakery located in . The couple first opened the doors for business in April.

According to Morrow, the two had worked several jobs in both the Pittsburgh area and in Florida, but were ready to move on to bigger and better things.

“We were tired of being the grunt workers. We wanted to be at the other end of things,” she said.

After spending several months looking for the right place to open up shop, they were shown an ad for the building on First Street. Being Canonsburg residents for three years, the location was perfect. Having looked at locations as far away as Altoona, this spot would allow them to stay put and fulfill their dream, the couple said.

Not only has the neighborhood been a great fit, but so have the neighbors.

“Within the first month alone a lot of the neighbors had swung on by to check the place out. Also a lot of other local business owners had come by to introduce themselves," Morrow said.

The bakery offers a lot of variety, but in the first six months the most popular item has been the cinnamon rolls. Other popular breakfast items include their danishes and muffins.

Every day, First Street Bakery features a different type of homemade bread including banana nut on Thursdays and a garlic cheddar herb on Saturdays.

They offer a wide variety of cakes, and even offer a gluten-free option with their Chocolate Decadence Cake. In addition to the baked goods, they have a small catering menu.

Morrow said their biggest challenge to date is one that's out of their control.

“There are only 24 hours in the day. You always want to try to do more, but there isn't enough time,” Morrow said.

With only the Morrows working at the bakery—and occasional help from her husband, Aaron's, mother—it can be challenging to accomplish everything they would like to do. Despite that, they are planning on expanding their menu for the holiday season.

Customers can expect pumpkin cheesecakes and other holiday favorites as Thanksgiving and Christmas draw closer.

The bakery is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
