North Strabane Fire Department Hosting Open House Saturday

As part of National Fire Prevention Month, the North Strabane Fire Department is hosting an open house from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Adults and kids alike are invited to take part in the festivities, which include demonstrations—such as one of a second-floor evacuation, and one that will teach participants pet CPR.

Visitors can also peruse the department’s various pieces of equipment and vehicles.

“We’ll also have two cars to cut up,” North Strabane fire fighter Kim Bonifield said, referring to a demonstration of a vehicle rescue.

Those who attend will also learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher—something Bonifield said isn’t common knowledge.

“People think you’re supposed to spray it at the fire and it will go out and it doesn’t,” she said. “You have to spray it on what’s actually on fire.”

There will also be activities for the kids, including visits from mascots such as King’s Restaurant’s Frownie, and a demonstration instructing youngsters on how to use a fire hose.

The fire safety house will also be set up to help teach kids to properly navigate and exit their homes when they are filled with smoke.

Refreshments will be served.

The event is being held in conjunction with National Fire Safety Month.
