
John J. Wilk, 90, of North Strabane, died Sunday, July 8, 2012 in
He was born June 16, 1922 in Pittsburgh, a son of Alexander and Rosalia Czeretska Wilt.
Prior to his retirement, he posted billboards for Pittsburgh Outdoor Advertising. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish, the Knights of Columbus and the VFW Post 191. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army, when he received the Purple Heart with one Oak Leak Cluster, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three bronze stars. On July 15, 1950, he married Margaret Spencer, who died Oct. 31, 2006.

Surviving are four daughters, Sharon Mickle (and husband Jim) of Spring Creek; Peggy Joan Fincham (and husband Otis) of Marianna; Joneen Marie Wilk of Washington; Joy Lynn Bombash (and husband Andrew) of North Strabane. He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Masson of Lawrence and Irene Kelley of Bellevue, as well as seven grandchildren: Jodie Pinkerton, Tammy Stretor, John Fincham, Brenda Dorsey, Lori Mickle, and Timothy and Patrick Bombash. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Edward and Joseph Wilk, three sisters, Sophia Fertig, Frances Nelson and Nancy Patnesky—as well as four siblings who died in infancy.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at the located at 30 E. College St. in Canonsburg.
Departing prayers will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church at 10 a.m.
The combined honor guards of VFW Post 191 and the American Legion Post 902 will accord full military rites.
Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in McMurray.
