Sometimes "selfless" is understood in terms of something lost, or given up, as in "selfless sacrifice". This assumes an impenetrable duality between self and the rest of everything. Consider selflessness in the absence of duality. If you think of yourself as being an inseparable part of everything, then selflessness represents that connection rather than a loss. Instead of sacrificing something, you gain everything.
