Decoding the Devil: Black Women Codebreakers and the Secret War Against Stalin’s Bombtells the shocking true story of four women in segregated codebreaking units in the National Intelligence Agency during World War II and the Cold War. This eye-opening book was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities 2024 Public Scholar Award.
Tonight, join Pittsburgh author Sarah Valentine as she shares an inside look at this fascinating chapter of history and the overlooked but crucial contributions of these women, as well as the prejudice and other challenges they faced during their service. Explore their story, and learn about Sarah’s approach to researching and writing about this previously untold history.

Calling all women veterans and family members: join us to connect with other women through a love of reading!Paperback Platoon is a book club for women filled with veterans, service members, and their families. Our goal is to build connection with each other through a shared interest and love for reading. This group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 6:30-7:30 PM.Our title for this meeting will be Cackle by Rachel Harrison. Join certified yoga instructor Leah Shuck for a gentle, slower flow yoga practice every second and fourth Monday evening!Mindful yoga is a rewarding way to exercise while reducing stress and centering your mind. Please bring a yoga mat, a bottle of water, and something to use as a strap (an old scarf, belt, or necktie work just fine!). You are also welcome to bring a block, blanket, bolster, etc if you wish. If you don’t have a yoga mat, we have a few available to borrow.This is a pay-what-you-can class where participants can pay $0-$15, with a suggested donation of $10 per class. Instructor Deborah Lee a classically trained cellist, holds a professional Sound Bath Practitioner certification accredited by the Global Sound Practitioner Alliance and The Complementary Medical Association. Specializing in singing bowl immersion, she integrates formal musicianship with therapeutic acoustic resonance that may help reduce stress and regulate the nervous system.

This can lead people to feel cautious, careful, or fearful of Islam, or in some cases, avoid it altogether or hate it due to a lack of knowledge on the topic.In this illuminating yet clear presentation, join Ray Milhem for an exploration of the basics of Islam; its relationship with other religions; and the tight coupling of Islam and Arabs, comparable to the role of Christianity in the West.The Holy Land (Palestine) was the birthplace of Christianity and Judaism. Islam was “born” in the Arabian Peninsula (modern day Saudi Arabia), but it has many strong connections to the Holy Land.We will also discuss “Extreme Islam” and its similarities to “Extreme Christianity” and “Extreme Judaism.”Please note: this presentation is intended as a safe space for education.
