Cranberry Thinks Big, Funds Huge New Disc Golf Course

The new course will be the longest in the state and one of the longest in the world.

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA - When it comes to advancing the sport of disc golf, Cranberry isn't afraid to think big. The township's preliminary $77.1 million budget includes $300,000 for the Cranberry Township Community Chest plan to build the longest disc golf course in the state and one of the 10 largest among the 7,400 disc golf course in the world in North Boundary Park.

The course is slated to be completed next year.

The course is expected to be among the world’s most challenging, with the design anticipated to include elevation changes, tight fairways and many trees players will have to navigate around.

Much like a conventional golf course, each hole in the course will have three different concrete tee pads to allow play for those at every skill level, including the long-throw championship level. Although the course will be nationally sanctioned for a rotation of tournaments, officials envision making it a premier course hosting a yearly multi-day tournament that attracts the game's best players.

The project also will include a six-hole ADA-accessible recreational/instructional disc golf course and two miles of new nature trails that will connect with other nearby trails. The course will be located on the 30-acre western section of North Boundary Park along a currently undeveloped hillside.

The preliminary 2018 budget doesn't include a tax hike. Township supervisors are expected to approve it on Thursday, triggering a public review process that will enable the adoption of a final budget on Dec. 14. The preliminary budget keeps the millage rate at 13.25.
