Cranberry Waterpark Boosting Safety Awareness Efforts

Dozens of rescues have occurred at the pool already this summer.

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA - The statistic is sobering and scary. While no drownings have ever occurred in Cranberry’s Community Waterpark in its 20 years of operation, this year alone 64 rescues have already taken place at the pool.

That’s prompting Cranberry recreation program coordinator Valerie Murphy; Dave Hunter, her supervisor, and the entrie parks and recreation staff to ramp up safety awareness at the water park.

The waterpark staff is renaming the 15-minutes each hour formerly designated as “adult swim” as “safety break.” The idea is to keep children from becoming exhausted in the pool, which can be deadly. Additionally, the waterpark pool formerly designated as the zero-depth entry or baby pool is now being referred to as the wading pool to distinguish it from the deeper adjacent swimming pool.

There’s more. New informational signs are being posted around the pools and in the changing rooms. Guests are requested to sign a non-binding safety pledge as they enter the waterpark. Temporary tattoos with safety messages are available for children. Pool staff members are being encouraged to share safety messages with guests.

Located in North Boundary Park, the waterpark is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting.
