New Housing Development Makes First Foray into Cranberry

The neighborhood, which includes homes and apartments, would be located near the intersection of Glen Eden and Freshcorn roads.

A new neighborhood could be on its way for Cranberry.

On Tuesday, Cranberry planning commission members got their first look at a yet-unnamed housing development that would spread across the empty field near the intersection of Freshcorn and Glen Eden roads.

Preliminary plans for the property show 38 single-family homes, 46 townhouses and 252 apartment units.

Ron Henshaw, Cranberry’s director of community development, said Larry Dorsch, of Cranberry’s Kellaur Corporation, is developing the neighborhood. Dorsch also is the developer behind the

Henshaw said the neighborhood would have Traditional Neighborhood Development elements, which include extensive landscaping, parklets and pedestrian walkways. The plans also show a community center and a pool.

“It has very good pedestrian circulation,” Henshaw said.

The neighborhood would be built out in three phases. First up would be the homes, the apartments second and the townhouses built last. Henshaw noted the townhouses are similar in design to those in . The architect for the project also worked with Cranberry on , a neo-traditional neighborhood located off Powell Road.

Preliminary plans also show a traffic roundabout at the entrance to the neighborhood.  Henshaw said the roundabout—similar to the one in front of the Westinghouse headquarters in the Cranberry Woods business park—should serve to slow down speeders along rural Glen Eden Road, which is owned by the state. In recent years, Henshaw noted there have been several car accidents near the planned site. 

“It overall should provide a safer intersection,” he said.

Design plans at this point are still tentative. Henshaw said the developers need at least another month before they present the plans to planning commission members for review.

“They’re going to take the time to make it right,” Henshaw said.
