News Nearby: 'Slap Shot' Stars Take Over RMU Sports Center

Stars from the 1977 Paul Newman film take to the ice at Robert Morris University's arena.

Fans filled the stands at Island Sports Center Saturday to watch Slap Shot stars reunite for a good cause.Β 

Dave Hanson and brothers Steven and Jeff Carlson appeared in the annual "Pucks and Sticks" charity as their alter egos the Hanson Brothers, stars of the 1977 hockey comedy Slap Shot.

The game featured local celebrities, including KDKA'sΒ Ross Guidotti and RMU hockey head coachΒ Derek Schooley, vying against Pittsburgh-area EMS staffers.Β Funds raised at the event will benefit theΒ Pittsburgh Emergency Medicine Foundation.Β

Hanson now serves as the of the Island Sports Center. Event organizer John Chamberlain said Slap Shot's cult status among hockey fans has grown in the three decades since the film's release.Β 

"It's still crazyβ€”and it's the 35th anniversary of the movie being released," said event organizer John Chamberlain. "[During last year's Stars and Sticks event] people showed up to have their Christmas card picture taken with [the Hanson brothers.]"
