Seneca Valley Student Nationally Lauded For Volunteer Efforts

The 7th-grader has raised thousands of dollars for the American Diabetes Association.

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA - A Seneca Valley Middle School student hasn’t let diabetes hinder his efforts to help others. Corbin Edge, 13, has won a national award for his volunteer efforts.

Corbin has received a Prudential Spirit of Community Awards certificate of excellence and a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The Prudential Award, a joint effort of Prudential Finance and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, bestows the certificates to the top 10 percent of award applicants.

Seneca Valley Middle School Principal Robert Ceh nominated Corbin for the award last fall after he raised $17,500 for the American Diabetes Association. Corbin’s success in raising awareness and money also led to his section as the Western Pennsylvania Diabetes Association’s 2017-18 youth ambassador.

Corbin has been afflicted with Type 1 diabetes since he was 18 months old.

“I have learned that having Type 1 diabetes is nothing to be ashamed of or to hide because I can live a normal life and use my personal life to encourage and teach others about the disease of diabetes,” he said in a district release. “This makes me realize how important my efforts are for all diabetics. Remember, no matter how small or large the results are, it is really more about helping others and teaching about life as a diabetic.”
