Dormont Man Dies In Ice Fishing Accident

The accident occurred Monday in a lake in Butler County.

DORMONT, PA - The man killed Monday in an ice fishing accident in Moraine State Park in Butler County has been identified as Pierre Niesen Jr., 71, of Dormont.

A dive team recovered Niesen’s body about 1 p.m. in about 8 feet of water in Lake Arthur, several hours after a call to 911 reporting that a man had appeared to go through the ice and was waving his arms for help.

Niesen’s fishing gear was found near a hole in the ice.

Park officials estimated the ice was three inches thick or less in the area where the accident occurred. According to information from the World Fishing Network, no one should attempt to ice fish if the ice is less than four inches thick.

According to Niesen’s obituary, a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the William F. Slater Funeral Home in Scott Township.
