Phillies Baseball Legend Coming To Doylestown To Talk Sun Safety

DOYLESTOWN, PA — Phillies baseball legend and Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt is bringing his sun safety message to Doylestown on Tuesday.

The visit is part of "Play Sun Safe," a community-focused initiative by Dermatology Partners and the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation that is bringing sun safety education and free sunscreen access directly to the fields where local youth are playing baseball and softball.

At Turk Park II, Schmidt is scheduled to speak to more than 300 children who play for the Doylestown Athletic Association. Schmidt, a melanoma survivor, is dedicated to ensuring the next generation of players and fans understands the importance of skin protection.

“As a professional baseball player, I spent most of my career in the sun — without sunscreen,” Schmidt said. “While my career was thriving, my skin was being damaged by the harmful rays of the sun. Now, I’m committed to making sure the next generation of players and fans understands how to protect themselves.”

Following his presentation, Schmidt will pose for team photos. There will also be a raffle of a signed Mike Schmidt jersey and baseball, with all proceeds going to support the RDK and Mike Schmidt Foundations.

During the event, Dermatology Partners will provide sun screen access and educational materials for families and fans. At a future date, Dermatology Partners also will be installing permanent sunscreen dispensers at the fields, along with a seasonal supply of sunscreen.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., affecting one in five Americans.

The "Play Sun Safe" initiative meets families where they are — at the ballpark — to make sun safety a standard part of the game-day routine. The Doylestown Athletic Association Baseball and softball programs, which serve 300 children from Pre-K through 8th grade, is one of the first organizations to receive ongoing support through the partnership.

"The Doylestown Athletic Association is excited to partner with Dermatology Partners, who is doing so much to help the organization and the families we serve," said Fred Greco, managing director for the Doylestown Athletic Association.

Dermatology Partners, the largest physician-led dermatology group in the Mid-Atlantic, has teamed up with the Richard David Kann (RDK) Melanoma Foundation and the Mike Schmidt Foundation to take on skin cancer — using the reach and passion of baseball to connect with communities across Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.

The Doylestown event begins at 5 p.m. with the sun safety presentation at 5 p.m. at Turk Park II, 1260 Almshouse Road, Doylestown Township.
