River Crossing YMCA has announced the launch of the RCY Swim League, a new internal competition structure. Teams will represent their home branches in Nazareth, Bethlehem, Quakertown, Doylestown and Fairless Hills in PA, and Flemington, NJ. The new competitive swim structure will replace the organization's current participation in traditional dual meet leagues beginning this Sept.
The RCY Swim league is designed to provide swimmers, families and coaches with greater scheduling transparency, developmentally appropriate competition formats, and a stronger sense of community across River Crossing YMCA, Lou Petto, Sr. Dr. of competitive aquatics for River Crossing YMCA said. The Y serves 607 competitive swimmers on regional teams throughout Bucks, Lehigh, Northampton and Hunterdon (NJ) counties.
“A primary driver of the change is the limited scheduling control inherent in external dual meet leagues,” explained Petto. “Competition schedules are frequently released late in the summer, sometimes after tryouts have already taken place, and pool availability requests are not always honored. This has resulted in last-minute changes and uncertainty for families trying to plan their commitment to the season.”
According to Petto, with the RCY Swim League, the full competition schedule will be finalized and published each spring, well before July and August tryouts. Families will have clear visibility into meet dates, formats, and expectations before committing to the season.
Rather than traditional dual meets every weekend, Petto said the RCY Swim League will feature creative, curriculum-based formats built around positive meet experiences and well-rounded athletic development:
The league will also provide structured opportunities for older and more experienced swimmers to take on leadership and mentoring roles with younger teammates.
The RCY Swim League consists of six teams representing River Crossing YMCA branches:
The RCY Swim League serves as a regular-season competition structure and does not replace championship-level swimming. NJ and PA teams will continue to qualify for and compete in their respective state YMCA meets, and experienced swimmers will retain access to YMCA invitationals and USA Swimming-sanctioned meets.
At the conclusion of the league season, River Crossing YMCA will hold a RCY Championship Meet open to all league swimmers regardless of age or experience level, providing an inclusive and celebratory end-of-season milestone for every athlete.
The upcoming season will serve as a pilot for the new league. Petto said River Crossing YMCA will evaluate how the league model supports swimmer development, family experience, and program operations, and will communicate openly with families throughout the process. Feedback gathered during the pilot will inform the league's future direction.
"We believe this approach improves transparency, strengthens swimmer development, and reflects the YMCA's commitment to high-quality, mission-driven programming," said Petto.
Enrollment for the new RCY Swim League is open, with tryouts already underway for some teams. Current and new swim families are encouraged to visit www.ymcarivercrossing.org/swimming/swim-team to learn more and sign up for the new RCY Swim League.
