Driver Faces Serious Charges After Hitting Pedestrian In Warrington

WARRINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — A 60-year-old man is facing serious charges after he struck a pedestrian with his car Monday morning in Warrington and then failed to render aid and report the accident to police.

The accident happened around 9 a.m. in the 600 block of Addison Way when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle backing out of a driveway at a high rate of speed, police said.

When police and first responders arrived on the scene, they found the victim lying in the roadway and screaming in pain. Police said the victim had obvious head trauma and was transported to Abington Hospital as a Level 1 Trauma.

Police initially believed the victim had sustained their injuries in a fall.

At 9:41 a.m., the investigation took a turn when police were told by a neighboring resident that it was a possible hit-and-run accident and not a fall.

Police obtained video that showed a vehicle backing out of a driveway at a high rate of speed as the victim walked along the sidewalk. The vehicle struck the victim, throwing them approximately six to eight feet, police said.

The driver was later identified as 60-year-old Anwar Hussain of Warrington.

After striking the victim, police said Hussain exited his vehicle and checked on the victim before driving up the driveway toward the residence at a high rate of speed. Hussain then exited the vehicle again and ran back toward the scene carrying his cellphone.

Once police, fire, and ambulance personnel left the scene, police said Hussain drove to work in Philadelphia.

Hussain was subsequently located and voluntarily responded to the Warrington Police Station, where he was interviewed.
Investigators determined that Hussain never called 911 nor advised police that he had been involved in the crash while emergency responders were on scene.

Hussain was also present when officers asked bystanders if anyone knew what had happened and remained silent, police said.

Hussain was processed and arraigned by Judge Wertman, who set bail at $100,000 unsecured. He is charged with an accident involving death or personal injury, a third-degree felony; recklessly endangering another person, a misdemeanor; and summary offenses for failing to provide police with information or rendering aid, reckless driving, and emerging from an alley, driveway, or building.
