Stop Wasting Your Hour on the Driving Range: The Ultimate 60-Minute Golf Practice Plan

An hour of hitting balls with no plan might feel productive, but it changes absolutely nothing.

This post was contributed by a community member.

If you walk down the line at any local driving range this weekend, you will see the exact same thing: golfers dragging over a large bucket, pulling out the big stick, and rapid-firing drivers for 60 straight minutes.

An hour of hitting balls with no plan might feel productive, but it changes absolutely nothing. In fact, mindless repetition usually just ingrains bad habits and leaves you exhausted before you even reach the first tee.

If you want to lower your golf scores and actually improve your golf game, you need a structured driving range routine. If you only get one hour to practice this week, here is exactly how to break it down to ensure it translates directly to the scorecard.

The First 10 Minutes: Wake Up the Strike

Leave the driver in the bag. Grab your wedges. For the first ten minutes, you are hitting half-swings with absolutely zero target pressure. We aren't trying to fix any mechanical flaws right now. Your only goal is waking up the strike, finding the bottom of the swing arc, and feeling the golf ball compress on the center of the clubface. It's about establishing rhythm and tempo.

The Next 20 Minutes: Your "One Thing"

This is the part of the hour that actually changes your golf swing. Take the single priority you are currently working on with your swing—not three things, just one thing. Attach a specific drill to it, and execute it slowly and deliberately. Do not rush. Exaggerate the specific feel you are trying to achieve and own the movement. Deliberate practice is the only way to build new muscle memory.

The Next 20 Minutes: Make It Real

Now it is time to take that same technical feel and apply it to a target. For this block, you are pulling a different club for every single shot. Use your full pre-shot routine and give yourself only one ball per target—just like you face on the actual golf course. There is no raking another ball over if you hit a bad one. You must accept the result, analyze it, and move to the next shot. This builds the transition from "range swing" to "course swing."

The Last 10 Minutes: Play 9 Holes in Your Head

Step off the practice line and simulate real golf. Play nine holes of your home course in your head right there on the range. Picture the first tee shot, pick a specific fairway target, and hit it. Based on how you hit that drive, visualize your approach shot. If you miss the imaginary green, hit the up-and-down pitch. Go through your full routine on every single swing.

That is an hour that actually moves the needle. Stop playing "golf swing" and start playing golf. Put this 60-minute practice plan into play next time you visit the facility, and watch what happens to your scores.
