DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — After 51 years on South Hamilton Street, the Doylestown Farmers Market will be making a move to 10 Doyle St. and Broad Commons Park in 2027.

Following five decades of growth on Hamilton Street, the market has reached a point where the physical constraints of the space no longer allow it to move forward in the ways the market and the community would like to see, market organizers said.

The market is currently unable to accommodate additional vendors, offer existing vendors expanded schedules or larger footprints, or provide the open, welcoming environment customers have said they would like to see.

Beyond the space itself, the Hamilton Street location presents ongoing infrastructure challenges. Parking is limited and outside of the market's control, and restroom facilities have relied on temporary solutions that fall short of the experience the market wants to offer.

"Change is hard but also good, and this change is a positive step forward for the market," said Chef Kelly Unger, director of the Doylestown Farmers Market and board member of the market's parent organization, the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance. "Since becoming director of the market in 2016, I have worked diligently to recruit the best producers and growers in our foodshed that we all enjoy today."

She added, "Currently we are spoiled for choice as more folks have ventured out of corporate life and are pursuing their passions as local food producers. But we have simply outgrown the footprint of South Hamilton Street to accommodate all that our market can be and offer."

Unger said feedback from the market community has been consistent and clear: shoppers want room to linger, to connect with neighbors, to sit and enjoy live music, and to experience the market as a true gathering place, not simply a place to shop and go.

The new location on Doyle Street addresses all of this directly, offering dedicated parking, permanent restroom facilities, and the physical space to grow, said Unger.

"The Doylestown Farmers Market has always been more than a place to buy food," said market manager Alex Dadio. "This move gives our farmers and producers room to thrive and gives our community room to gather, linger, and enjoy the market together."

Part of a Broader Shift

The move also reflects a broader shift across the farmers market industry, where markets are increasingly becoming anchors of community life rather than purely transactional spaces, said Unger. Research and experience both confirm that when customers feel comfortable and engaged, they stay longer and enjoy community interactions more, she said.

Relocating allows the market to grow its vendor community, deepen the experience for customers, and allow the Doylestown Farmers Market, already a beloved gathering place in the community, to flourish into an even more vibrant and connected hub for years to come, said Unger.

The community is invited to join the market on Saturday, April 17, at 10 Doyle Street from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for opening day with all of the market's beloved farmers and producers. Visitors can sit on a bench or at a table and enjoy coffee and food, chat with neighbors, let the kids play at the playground, and, as always, enjoy live music every week.

The market also invites everyone to subscribe to its free weekly newsletter to learn which vendors are coming and what activities are happening each week, plus recipes and helpful ingredient information. Sign up at doylestownfarmersmarket.bucksfoodshed.org.
