Changing from a Medicare Advantage Plan to a Medicare Supplement Plan in Pennsylvania
Yes you can change from a Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement Plan however, this can normally only be done during the Annual Election Period which is form Oct 15th to Dec 7th each year. You will need to dis-enroll from your existing Medicare Advantage Plan and apply for a Medigap, or Medicare Supplement Plan. In addition, you will also need to apply for a new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan during the Annual Election period which will have an effective date of January 1st. You’ll also want to apply in advance for a Medigap Plan so this will give the Medicare Supplement Insurance Company time to underwrite your new Medicare Supplement plan with a requested effective date of January 1st of the coming year.
In addition, there is a Medicare Advantage dis-enrollment period. The Medicare Advantage Dis-enrollment Period, which begins January 1st and runs until February 14th and this election period replaces the Open Enrollment Period, this an opportunity for beneficiaries to dis-enroll from an Medicare Advantage plan and return to original Medicare. It is not an additional enrollment period nor is it an opportunity for Medicare Advantage members to switch to different Medicare Advantage Plans. The effective date of a dis-enrollment request made using the Medicare Advantage Dis-enrollment Period will be the first of the month following receipt of the dis-enrollment request. A request made in January will be effective February 1, and a request made in February will be effective March 1.
