When you’re “working from home”, it’s truly imperative to treat that schedule as you would in a “real” work environment.
But I also encourage scheduling short breaks approximately every 2 hours. Otherwise our mind just can’t focus on creative work much longer than that.

What ultimately happens is you spin in circles wondering why you can’t crank out another project… It’s human nature! There’s nothing wrong with you!
BUT, when you are looking to be super productive you need to really focus. Clear out external distractions and sometimes move!

1. Close the door.
A closed door represents “do not enter”. But it’s necessary for others in your environment to be aware of that rule! So…tell them!
2. Post your hours outside your door.
For example you can post a “mommy working hard” sign. Or “creativity hours are in session” please do not disturb. Get creative and heck be cute about it too!
3. Use headphones!
Even in a quite home, there is something calming about plugging up my ears. Sometimes I need background music, but typically work that requires creativity and a lot of deep thought comes so much easier when I am “in the zone”.
4. Ignore them.
Harsh? Yes. But I know I have tried in the past to calmly say “I’m working” but inevitably someone has a story they want to share. I simply explain that I want to concentrate on everything they want to share… So in order for me not to be distracted, I need to finish “this”. Of course we don’t want to avoid or ignore our children or give them the impression they’re not important. But as a parent, wife or co-worker, there is a balance that you can still institute.
5. Get the hell out!
I have found that I work best to do creative work and writing when I’m in an environment outside my typical “home” and “office”. I like to sit quietly in the library or during evening hours at a coffee shop. I’m totally shocked at how fast I can whip up a blog post or create a self help guide when I’m free of all things that seem “homey”.
