Recovering from your workouts!

Meeting your goals: Do you incorporate rest and recovery periods into your training blocks?

Most of the fitness enthusiasts we meet don't understand or simply don't incorporate periods of rest and recovery into their training blocks. Workouts such as running, cycling, or heavy lifting are very linear movements, and, if overtrained, can lead to performance declines that can take months to reverse. Take cycling for example: Many elite-level cyclists take 1-2 weeks off the bike about the time when their fitness is peaking. Why is this important? Because without rest their muscles simply cannot re-build 100% of the fibers that are broken down during repeated rides.  With the proper diet this rest period allows riders to fully rebuild fibers that are broken down repeatedly from heavy training loads and long, fast miles.  When the rest period is over, riders often find they can resume training right where they left off and usually see gains come quickly. Resting also gives athletes a chance to take a break from the mental stresses of everyday training. Many of us use working out as a means to decompress, but sometimes your mind could use a break from being in the gym all the time also. Use the break to think of new workout routines, find a new playlist, or measure your gains against your objectives. Rest and recovery is something all fitness enthusiasts should take seriously. Incorporate rest into your routine and you will see improvements quickly.
