5 Things to Know Today: March 14

A quick round-up of what's going on...

Good morning everyone. It's Monday, March 14. It's the 132 anniversary of Einstein's birth. Actors Michael Caine and Billy Crystal were both born on this day. Here's what's happening closer to home:

1. First up, we're sorry we didn't mention this sooner, but Easton can claim another state wrestling champ. Mitch Minotti, a junior at Easton Area High School, became the school's 35th PIAA Class AAA champion on Saturday in Hershey. Once again, Ellis Weitzman, who's been following the team all season, has provided us with photos, which I've included here.

2. If your daily travels take you over the Bushkill Street bridge -- the one near Route 22 and Fourth Street -- you'll need an alternate route, for the next few months. The city is starting on the bridge today, and the job could last until mid-summer.

3. The week ahead brings us quite a few government meetings: Easton's Historic District Commission meets later today at 5:30, with the Redevelopment Authority and Parking Authority convening at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and 7 p.m. Thursday, respectively. The main event for this week, however, is Northampton County Council, where lately, it's been All Gracedale, All the Time. That's happening at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

4. The spring sports season is getting under way. In Easton, that means the softball, soccer and lacrosse teams all have scrimmages this week.

5. On his blog, Patch columnist Jon Geeting says that District Attorney John Morganelli needs a challenger. And on the Neighbors of Easton blog, Noel Jones argues that asking Easton teachers to agree to a pay freeze does not equal not supporting them.
