Check It Out - Brother Sun, Sister Moon
The gentle prayer of St. Francis of Assisi is translated for today's families and illustrated with our own, uniquely Pennsylvanian, cut-paper illustrations.

BROTHER SUN, SISTER MOON (Saint Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures, reimagined by Katherine Paterson and illustrated by Pamela Dalton)
It is hard to imagine a more beautiful presentation of a prayer. Katherine Paterson has taken the words of St. Francis and kept their spirit while making their meaning clear to modern families. Neither St. Francis nor Paterson use specifically Christian terms, referring to God and the Lord as well as Sister Earth and Brother Fire. The words are filled with gratitude and promote respect and peace.
It is the illustrations, though, that make this book extraordinary. Each page is one incredibly intricate piece of Scherenschnitte, a form of paper cutting practiced most famously by the Pennsylvania Germans. Cut from one piece of paper and painted in soft watercolors, each scene is filled with examples of the wind and water, love and forgiveness mentioned in the prayer. Flowers bloom; birds sing; crops grow; and families play, work, and share.
