Check It Out - Neville
With a new twist on the old theme of moving and making new friends, this picture book has a surprise ending and clever illustrations.

NEVILLE (written by Norton Juster and illustrated by G. Brian Karas)
A moving van drops off a boy, his mother, and their possessions in front of a colorless house on an ugly street. At his mother’s urging, the unhappy boy sets off on a walk around the neighborhood. At the end of the block, he begins to shout the name “Neville.” Soon kids pour from the houses and join in the search for the elusive Neville.
The colors of the illustrations set the mood. At first, the neighborhood is all gray, and the only colors are in the boy and his possessions. With each connection he makes, more color is added.

Savvy adults may guess who Neville is, but the ending is likely to be a pleasing surprise for most children. Families who are planning a move, have recently moved, or are welcoming new neighbors will all find a chuckle and some reassurance in this clever tale.
Note to teachers: This would be a fine book to act out – lots of simple parts for all. It is recommended for children ages 5-8 and available at the Easton Area Public Library.
