Restaurants in Italy often have two menus – one for the tourists and one for the locals. And it is not just the languages that are different. So are the prices!
Tourists who take the time to learn the native tongue are always more welcome.
Think you need to take 90 credit hours at your local community college to converse like a pro? Not so. The Easton Area Public Library now offers a new online learning tool called MANGO. It ’s free, it’s easy and it’s fun. What more could you want? Except maybe love. Can’t help you there, but here’s more to love about MANGO:
Choose from over 30 languages, including both Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese, and some rare vernaculars such as Tagalog (Philippines) and Dari (Pakistan).
Includes more than 10 courses in English as a Second Language.
You can also learn Pirate. What!? Pirate? Arrrrgh! Just in time for Halloween.
There are two versions: Basic and Complete
Basic: Two to five hours is all you need to familiarize yourself with everyday greetings, gratitudes, goodbyes and helpful phrases. Well blow me down!
Complete: Courses in a language include 100 lessons, with helpful cultural tidbits to use or to ponder. Did you know that Pirates believed that wearing pierced earrings would improve their eyesight?
Even if you only take the time to learn a few simple greetings and expressions, you have made yourself stand apart from the rest of the flock no matter where you travel. Visit the Library’s website to preview more of what Mango has to offer. So get ready to say, “I’ve sailed the seven seas, and you’re the sleekest schooner I’ve ever sighted.” Hmmm. Maybe it can help you find love, too.
