TEENS, TWEENS, AND ASPIRING YA WRITERS – AN EVENT FOR YOU

Prizes, book sales, author greets and signings, and a chance to learn more about Young Adult fiction.

Following the March 2011 release of her Young Adult novel Lemniscate, local author Jennifer Murgia approached the staff at the Palmer Branch of the Easton Area Public Library with a suggestion: let’s do something special for our teens that highlights their literature. That idea became YA Fest 2012, scheduled for 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on August 4, at the Palmer Branch.

Among the 35 authors in attendance will be several leading names in YA fiction – Jonathan Maberry, Cyn Balog, Michelle Zink, Shannon Delaney, Chris Benoit, Josh Berk, and Maria V. Snyder – as well as two Middle Grade or Tween authors Barbara Dee and P.G. Kain.

Free raffles, a bake sale, and a book sale are part of the festivities. Harleysville Books in Harleysville, PA, will handle the book sale, with a percentage of the proceeds to be donated to the Palmer YA Department. Authors will be available to sign their books.

Highlighting the day will be two panel discussions aimed at YA readers and aspiring writers. The first is  “For Those Who Love to Read YA” and runs from 11:15 am to 12:30 pm. Topics are “Dystopian/Post Apocalyptic Fiction for Teens” (Jonathan Maberry); “Hot Boys, Danger, Romance – What We Have & What You Want in YA” (Michelle Zink); ‘Dangerous Characters – Why We Love Them” (Anne Greenwood Brown); and “Writing Middle Grade for Tweens Who Will Be Teens” (Barbara Dee).

The second panel from 12:45 to 1:45 pm is “For Aspiring Writers” and features “Getting Through the Drought – Working Through Writer’s Block” with Molly Cochran; “Co-Authoring – Writing Book 2 – Managing Solo Books” with Natalie Zaman and Charlotte Bennardo; and “Walking My Wacky Path to Publication” with Shannon Delaney.

The interactive “Master Berk Theatre” featuring Josh Berk will conclude the day’s programs followed by the announcement of raffle winners. The grand prize is a large basket filled with at least one item donated by each of the 35 authors in attendance.
