Easton Residents Petition For Sidewalk Garden

Are the along Sitgreaves and Church streets in Easton a code violation?

Although the city recieved a complaint about the gardens recently, owner Laini Abraham says they are an asset to the neighborhood. 

Quite a few people -- 420 as of Saturday afternoon -- agree with her. That's how many signed a petition she's circulating to allow the gardens to stay.

"The garbage and the weeds are a year-round detraction in the neighborhood while the gardens add beauty and life, grow fresh and healthy food, and make a walk through these alleys more enjoyable," Abraham wrote in introducing the petition.

Mayor Sal Panto addressed the situation on his Facebook page Saturday. The mayor says the complaint came in from a neighbor who tripped on one one the pots in the garden and fell. 

"The matter has been brought to our attention and I will make sure that we find an amicable resolve," Panto wrote. "We certainly don’t want to curtail the greening of the city, we want to encourage it."
