Forks Township Cottage in the Woods and FAAS Art Exhibit

Forks Township is set to open the “Cottage in the Woods”. The Forks Township Cottage, a stone house built in 1945, was purchased by the township approximately 15 years ago. It is surrounded by five acres of woods, giving a lovely appeal to this new cultural addition to the township.

On November 8th, Forks Area Art Society will be hosting a free art show at the Cottage. The society, founded in March 2010, will feature art by its members at this exhibit and reception. A unique and wide range of media, technique, and subject matter will be on display.

In 2013 the Forks Area Art Society led a campaign and received widespread support to “Save the Cottage”. An estimate of the restoration effort provided by the township cited the most serious issues as being water damage and extensive mold in the house. In November of 2013, after the township addressed the water leaks, ServiceMaster graciously donated over $20,000 in mold remediation work to help the “Save the Cottage” efforts. Over the next two years the Forks Township Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Zoning departments, as well as a number of residents and Forks Area Art Society members, worked to address the other major and minor repairs needed to open the house to the public. In addition, an Eagle Scout installed a new walkway on the site this past summer, which paved the way for this first FAAS event at the Cottage.

The Forks Area Art Society exhibition at the Cottage will include oils, acrylics, colored pencil, and wood turning. Admission is free and open to the public, with a chance to meet with some of the artists displaying their work. The society, which is open to artists of all mediums and skill levels, meets the second Wednesday of each month. The guiding principle is that of encouragement and a sense of fun with art. Each month features a demo by local artists.

Forks Township and the art society are excited about helping to inaugurate this new addition to the township and is encouraging everyone to stop by to view the outstanding works of art and visit the newly renovated Cottage.
