Stoffa: More Northampton County Checks Forged
County Executive John Stoffa says forged checks were used in Georgia and South Carolina.

For the second time in the last 12 months, Northampton County is the apparent victim of a check forgery scheme.
Last year, eight people were charged with and cashing them in local stores, stealing more than $18,000.
The accused apparently made phony checks from the county's criminal division bail account, something that last February.

And now, a different group of people is trying the same thing, only this time in South Carolina and Georgia, County Executive John Stoffa reported to County Council Thursday night.
Stoffa said Easton police are investigating the scheme, which had already netted the people involved $3,800.

He noted that the forgeries weren't very good ones.
"They spelled 'Northampton' with two 'H's," Stoffa said.
Stoffa asked council to lobby state lawmakers to replace the checks the county uses for the bail account with debit cards.
