Voter Turnout Low Around Easton

Easton poll workers see a steady stream of voters, but less than they'd like.

Poll workers around Easton reported low voter turnout Tuesday, despite races for the Easton Area School Board and the battle for the mayor's office.

"We've seen a steady flow, but not the numbers we'd like to see," said Jill Piperata, judge of elections for the city's ninth ward.

It's where -- they'd been earlier in the day -- but as of 4:15 p.m., only 300 of the ward's 1,800 registered voters had been into cast their vote at the .

"I think there's a hole," Piperata said. "People don't place a lot of importance on a municipal election."

The situation was the same throughtout the city. At the , poll workers were livid with their low turnout.

"You have people who won't walk across the street," one poll worker said. "It hurts. It really does."

At the Easton Area Community Center in the West Ward, poll workers for the city's sixth and seventh districts had seen 120 and 118 voters, respectively, as of around 6 p.m. The two wards each have about 1,000 registered voters. 

"By this time, we're usually on the second page," said poll worker Mae Smith, pointing to her sign-in sheet. "Now we're just getting started on the second page."
